WhatAPlate's Story:

Yes, owning a beautiful Chevelle like this would be a Rolling Dream, but the plate has a deeper meaning than that.

Rollin’ Dreams was established to carry out the wishes of Austin Williams who died March 12, 2013, after a three year battle with an aggressive muscle cell cancer called Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma.

During his three years of chemo, radiation, a bone marrow transplant, many surgeries, and finally cyber knife radiation, Austin’s biggest complaint was boredom. Like many teens diagnosed with cancer, he was unable to attend school nor hang out with friends for extended periods of time.

As Austin neared age 16, he spent countless hours in the hospital researching classic cars. He identified a ’72 blue Chevelle with white racing stripes as his “dream car.” Thanks to hundreds of people, including reporters from the local NBC News affiliate (KUSA), a local car dealership, a professional organization of car dealers and social media, donations poured in. Austin was surprised with his dream car at a Denver car show in early November, 2012. He obtained his learner’s permit and drove his Chevelle any time an adult would ride with him.

Austin and his parents decided to create a charity, using the car to raise money to fund it. Austin wanted to take his Chevelle to car rallies and ask for donations. He wanted “teenage boys (and girls who like cars)” to have activities to keep them busy while in treatment. He suggested movie passes, Legos, model car kits, art projects, and tickets to music and sporting events. He also wanted kids to be able to take rides in his car.

As a long-term goal, Austin wanted to be able to give teens horse-back riding, camping, and other outdoor experiences. He named the charity, “Austin’s Rollin’ Dreams.”

Austin’s family is carrying out his wishes.
